Haute Loire

GENERAL INFORMATION
Le Grangeon is a tiny hamlet in the Haute Loire about 45 minutes north of Le Puy and 40 minutes south west of St Etienne which has an airport. It is 565 miles from Calais with a journey time of 7/8 hours. Lyons airport which has frequent flights from London and Manchester and where you can hire a car is 90 minutes away.

The area is extremely peaceful with lovely countryside and warm friendly people. There is good local shopping in the villages of Usson and St Pal (5 minutes drive) and lively markets 3 days a week. There are some excellent restaurants in the area and local activities include riding, tennis, fishing, kayaking, mountain biking, canoeing and walking.

There are many beautiful historic buildings to visit, notably the Abbey at Chaise-Dieu (International Music Festival held there in August) and a stunning medieval monastery at St Andre sur Chalencon. A lot of trouble is taken over all the local museums, which range from one about the French Resistance at Estivareilles to one dealing with the evolution of boules at St Bonnet. The area is famous for wild mushrooms, including ceps, chanterelles and morels which are found in the forests and fields in season.

ACCOMMODATION
Originally built in 1818, the main building has been renovated incorporating the stables and hay barn to make a large 6 bedroom family house. Many of the original features have been retained throughout, including exposed stone walls, wood panelling, beams and a beautiful old fireplace with bread oven. Up to 12 people can be accommodated.

Ground Floor: The focal point of the ground floor is a splendid, spacious living room (previously the "etables") with vaulted French windows opening on to the courtyard, garden and views beyond. It is tiled throughout and elegantly furnished with open stone fireplaces at each end.
Two steps lead up to the original farm kitchen with period cupboards and newly refurbished fitted kitchen including a ceramic hob, oven, double sink and microwave. A pantry adjoins the kitchen with a dishwasher, washing machine, fridge/freezer and double sink. There is also a "cave" behind the kitchen built into the rock for wine storage etc.

First Floor: On the first floor are five double bedrooms and three fully fitted bathrooms. Both main bedrooms have double beds and en suite bathrooms. One has a door opening to an ornamental wrought iron balcony. Bedrooms three and four have twin beds and bedroom five is very large with three single beds and French windows opening out to the rear of the house.

Barn: The adjoining barn at right angles to the house has been converted to provide a large ground floor double bedroom, outside cloakroom with WC and washbasin and an open area with ping pong table, garden furniture, barbecues etc. On the first floor is an open games area for darts and table football as well as table and chairs (an ideal breakfast spot)

Garden & Pool: The protected courtyard at the front of the house is totally private and ideal for sunbathing and eating outside. The oval filtered heated swimming pool 8 metres x 4 metres is set in its own secluded part of the garden beyond the courtyard. The area is enclosed by a fence with a lockable gate for the safety of young children. It has an underwater light for night swimming and will be cleaned and regulated for you during your stay. A solar powered water purifier with ionization is used which is an environmentally friendly system of keeping the water pure and clear while minimising the use of chemicals.
